FAQ

When/Where/How to buy Moonshrimp Beer

FAQ: FAQ

WHERE CAN I BUY YOUR BEERS?

Our beers are available in select stores or directly from the Moonshrimp Brewing’s Beer Window. Oregon alcohol laws make it complicated to post a list of stores that carry our beer. Call or email us to find locations near you.

Moonshrimp Brewing's Beer Window is located at 8428 SW 22nd Ave in Portland, OR.

WHEN IS MOONSHRIMP BREWERY OPEN?

Tuesdays 12 pm - 7 pm

Fridays 2 pm - 7 pm

We are also happy to schedule appointments. Call or email us to set up a time.

DO THE BEERS ONLY COME IN 22OZ BOTTLES? WHAT ABOUT GROWLER FILLS?

Our seasonals and many beer window exclusives now come in 500ml (16.9 oz) bottles! We have a limited number of kegs available either directly to the public or for wholesale to bars/restaurants/tap houses. Other than that, yes it is just hand filled bottles.

We used to do growler fills but have discontinued them. The beer window is only open for limited hours and the beer sits too long for growler fills to be practical.

HOW CAN RETAILERS CARRY YOUR BEERS?

Call or Email Brewer Dan. He’ll be happy to work out the details with you!

DO YOU MAKE CUSTOM BEERS FOR SPECIAL EVENTS?

Absolutely! We have made beers for both weddings and special events.

We offer the option of two sizes of bottle, a keg, or filling a keg shell. Be sure to contact us as soon as you know you'd like to design a custom brew for your event. We need a minimum of 2 months lead time (you can't rush good beer). Bulk discounts apply for amounts over 3 cases.

Check out the Beer Archive for some inspiration for your special event brew.

CAN YOU SHIP BEER?

We ship beer to Oregon, Alaska, and Washington DC. Call to place an order.

DO YOU HAVE A TASTING ROOM OR CAN I SAMPLE YOUR BEER AT THE WINDOW?

No. The beer window is located at our production facility. Oregon alcohol law requires certain criteria to be met in order to serve alcohol on the premises.

We hope to be able to add a tasting room sometime in the future, though.

IS YOUR BEER AVAILABLE FOR HOME DELIVERY?

Our beer is available for home delivery in the Portland area via the Lowkel app. www.lowkel.com to learn more. Lowkel is a new 3rd party app for small businesses to offer online shopping and home delivery at reasonable prices to business and a good price to consumers.

FAQ: FAQ

DOES YOUR BEER CONTAIN SHRIMP?

No. Never. See The Story Behind the Name for...well, the story behind the name.

WHEN YOU SAY “GLUTEN FREE AND VEGAN…”

We mean truly gluten free and vegan. Always. In practice, that looks like:

  • No wheat, barley, malt, or other gluten source anywhere in the brewery property, ever

  • No oats or oat products regardless of certifications or source

  • All brand new equipment to eliminate the possibility of residual gluten

  • No gelatin or isenglass used to clarify the beer

  • All verified beet sugar (cane sugar is objectionable to some vegans due to the way it is processed)

  • No food is allowed in the brewing or bottling area at any time, ever

  • Caramel made from rice syrup to remain vegan

IS THIS ACTUALLY BEER?  ACCORDING TO THE REINHEITSGEBOT...

The answer depends on who you ask and what you mean. According to the respected reinheitsgebot or German 'purity law' of 1516, Moonshrimp Brewing products do not qualify as beer since they contain ingredients other than "barley, hops, and water." But then again, many mainstream beers have also always contained added yeast and so were never really in compliance with the letter of the law to begin with.

The IRS certainly considers these brews to be beer.

Really, it comes down to what you want.  It looks like beer and tastes like beer and that is good enough for us.  I hope it is good enough for you too.

DO YOUR BEERS TASTE LIKE REGULAR BEER?

Pretty close. If our tasters (all of whom drink regular beer) don't pick ours over the competition, Dan goes back to the drawing board and tries again until they do. Moonshrimp doesn't promise that they taste exactly the same, but they do taste really good.

On average, when compared to traditional beers, our beers are lighter in character with a bit of a cider taste depending on the style.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS?

Our goal is to source ingredients as locally and sustainably as possible. Our hops come from Crosby Hop Farm, just outside of Salem. Our millet is from Colorado and our sugar is from Idaho. By weight, that makes up roughly 99% of our ingredients used, aside from water.

Other ingredients for seasonals or beer window exclusives come from all over, but we try to sustainably source whatever we can. For example, single origin fair trade coffee and chocolate, hand picked hibiscus flower, organic California limes, and sustainably harvested sea salt.

Sustainability is important to us. Click here to read more about our efforts.

DO YOU POST COMPLETE INGREDIENT LISTS? I HAVE AN ALLERGY CONCERN.

See the Beers page. We post the ingredient list for each beer there. If you still have concerns, give us a call and we will be happy to help.
